Our Dream Home

We've finally broken ground on our dream home! Can you believe it? (You can follow our construction progress here, along with lots of construction drama - the neighbors building their fence on our property, discovering we'd placed our house on a bunch of expensive rocks, our concrete footings being destroyed by a freak hail storm, etc.) Even more surprising than finally building the house we've dreamed of for years, we actually managed to work a good chunk of our ridiculous wish list into the actual design.

*Update*
Construction is finished! It took longer than expected and cost more too (that's how construction works, right?), but we are finally living in our mountain dream home and it's even better than I'd hoped! Here is a photo of our new kitchen and living room.

Our Dream Home

Believe it or not, our budget was meager. Really! My husband built the coffee table from an olive trunk and did the thin brick backsplash himself. Eventually, he's going to take the brick all the way to the top of the ceiling. He also created the three-tier chandeliers (three chandeliers total - yeah, he's pretty great).

See that sad little doggy above? When we first moved in, poor Pica didn't understand that we were here to stay - she kept trying to jump in the car to go back home. Dogs will break your heart.

I was responsible for all of the shopping and decorating decisions and design details and layout. We had the tongue-and-groove installed upside down (rough-side down) with Sherwin Williams Hawthorne stain, which was the perfect choice. The wall color is Polite White from Sherwin Williams and the kitchen cabinets are just a pure white - no tint. I went high/low with the cabinet hardware, mixing pricey hammered pulls from Pottery Barn with $1 knobs from Amazon. Those gorgeous chairs with nailhead trim? They were only about $150 each through Wayfair! Pretty much everything else you see was an open-box clearance item that someone else had returned.

Well, maybe everything except Pica. All the construction and moving wore her out! Have you ever seen a Jack Russell stay so still?

Original post from 2013:

Sexy Nerd wants to move up building our dream home to yesterday. I still don't know what I want though! Yes, it's difficult to decide on things like paint colors, flooring, and appliances. My problem is a bit worse.

Should we build one of those adorable 500 square feet mini houses? A (budget-friendly) mansion? A charming stone cottage?

Ultra-modern??

The internet makes it easy to find great design ideas for building our dream house. The downside is that all my favorite photos combine to make an overpriced, mismatched conglomeration.

According to my Pinterest account, my dream house has:

...a dramatic front entrance...

6/25/17 Update: Our entrance is dramatic - and bright, sunshine yellow, much to my Nana's horror.

brick fireplace
I think our yellow doors turned out nicely...though when we're enjoying a glass of wine by the fire pit, enjoying the New Mexico sunset, everything seems nice.

...this eye-catching wall of mirrors...

6/25/17 Update: We almost had a wall of mirrored cabinets in the kitchen, but Sexy Nerd and our builder and everyone else in the world talked me into only mirroring a few upper cabinets. The words "crazy" and "ugly" were thrown around more than I'd anticipated.

7/15/18 Update: My wall of mirrored cabinets would have bounced the natural light around and looked amazing. When building your own dream home, stick to your guns! Next house, I guess.

...stone accents like these...

6/25/17 Update: We did not build a beach house.

....a copper apron sink...

6/25/17 Update: I got my hammered copper apron sink. It's my favorite part of our new kitchen.

 ...a charming brick fireplace...

6/25/17 Update: The fireplace is stone, but it's very charming. We do have a brick wall in the guest bathroom, all the way to the 16' ceiling.

Photos of our real-life fireplace.

Photos of our real-life red brick bathroom.

...a floor-to-ceiling window...
(Though perhaps the bathroom isn't the most appropriate place for this.)

6/25/17 Update: None of the windows are entirely floor-to-ceiling, but we sure came close. We could even have gotten away with this in our master bathroom, as it's completely private. There is a large window inside the guest bathroom shower, which is not completely private. We want our guests to be comfortable, but not so comfortable that they move in.

...a quatrefoil ceiling in the master bedroom...

6/25/17 Update: After going around and around with our builder, there isn't a single quatrefoil in the entire house. We do have a double tray ceiling in the master bedroom though.

...a brick ceiling inside the kitchen...

6/25/17 Update: The ceiling is stained wood and the red brick is going on the kitchen wall as a countertop-to-ceiling backsplash. Sexy Nerd is going to install it because our tile guy charges $11/sq ft (!!!) to install brick, not including materials. And that's thin, lightweight, fake brick.

7/15/18 Update: I just re-read that last part and I'm still mad. $11/sq ft?! That's obscene.

...a curved floor in the guest bathroom...
(But with shorter cabinets and different tile that continues all the way to the door.)

6/25/17 Update: Our new house has EXACTLY this. See our curved bathroom floor here. Betcha didn't see that one coming, did you?

...the cutest little writer's nook...

(Lack of a writer's nook must be why I haven't finished my novel yet. Stupid current house, stifling my creativity.)

6/25/17 Update: The cozy writing nook is tucked into a closet behind a charming glass door. Still no novel though.

...this ceiling...
(How did they even create this?)

6/25/17 Update: It has been 4 years since I wrote this blog post. I still have no idea how this ceiling was created.

...a cobblestone floor like this for the patio...
(And maybe inside the house too?)

6/25/17 Update: No cobblestones, but we nailed the indoor-outdoor vibe with Villa Medici tile extending from the front patio to the foyer to the back patio.

...one of these rooftop tower dealies...
(Rooftop tower dealies is so much more fun to say than cupola. Try it.)

6/25/17 Update: We were (are) overbudget enough without a rooftop tower dealie.

...a fountain on our rooftop deck...
(Can't have a fountain on the ground with the bears and mountain lions, after all.)

6/25/17 Update: We were confident we'd rarely trudge up the stairs to a rooftop deck. OH MY GOD THE FOUNTAIN IS DOWN ON THE GROUND AND THE BEARS AND MOUNTAIN LIONS ARE GOING TO DEVOUR US AND EVERYONE WE HOLD DEAR. Look out, Pica and Biscuit.

...this brick barrel ceiling inside the dining nook...

6/25/17 Update: The dining nook has a groin vault and Sexy Nerd plans to cover it in something someday. One of the hallways has a barrel vault ceiling and that needs to be covered too. I'd be fine wallpapering both. (Translation: I'd be fine shopping for wallpaper and doing anything else while SN struggles to install it on a curved ceiling.)

...a view straight into the backyard when you step through the front door...

6/25/17 Update: See "cobblestone", above. Nailed it!

...acid stained concrete floors in a shade like this...

6/25/17 Update: Apparently, way back in 2013, I was planning to build a modern house.

greenscenelandscape.com
...metal accents like this...
(But with nice crisp corners.)

6/25/17 Update: Shoot, I forgot all about this. It's never too late, right?
("Yes, it is too late," says my husband, who lost patience with the construction process 10 months ago.)

...these windows!

6/25/17 Update: We have these exact windows, only with plus signs instead of plus signs with diamonds. So, the exact same but not the exact same.

What do you think? Can all my photos be merged into just 1 house? Are the design gods going to strike me down?

Sexy Nerd is ready to build, but based on my saved photos, our house fund is going to need at least a couple (dozen) more years of padding.

This reader-favorite recipe is *almost* as popular as my Cake Mix Cookie Bars recipe .  When making Cake Mix pancakes , the scrumptious possibilities are endless. Red Velvet cake mix pancakes. With this 2-ingredient recipe, you can turn your favorite cake mix into your favorite pancakes. Pancake making at its finest. It's Sunday morning and you're planning to do all the things today - scrub those grody baseboards, polish your quartz countertop that was supposed to be low maintenance but actually isn't at all, sort through the disaster that is the freezer.  While on your superhuman kick, you think I'm going to make my family pancakes for breakfast. Not just any pancakes - the best pancakes ever. I may even serve them as breakfast in bed! You pu

How to Move a Mattress

My site is popular for reviewing memory foam mattresses. With today's bed-in-a-box options lasting much longer than the traditional 7 years of a spring mattress, there's a good chance you'll eventually need to move one. But how? This is  how to move a mattress  without damaging it - even by yourself!  When we were faced with the challenge of moving our beloved Amerisleep AS3  to our new home, it seemed like my readers would enjoy the details. This handy tip should work for any memory foam bed, including Casper, Leesa, and Nectar.  I'm happy to report there is an extremely simple way to do it. Apartment and dorm dwellers rejoice! How to Move a Mattress At first, I wasn't sure how to move our king-size mattress down a flight of stairs. It's a problem we've dreaded solving ever since we made the decision to build a new house.  The answer? It was right in the back of our truck.  Ratchet straps . This solution could also serve as a 'How To' for returning

Chemical Peel Before & After

This article has been updated! My new chemical peel post, which includes pricing, Jessner peel before and after photos, product recommendations, and a helpful timeline for scheduling your treatments, is at the bottom. My original Jessner peel post (one of the most popular on my site of all time) is at the beginning. Original Chemical Peel Article Considering a chemical peel? I recently underwent my first Jessner peel and thought I'd share my results, post a Jessner peel review, and answer some frequently asked chemical peel questions. (I'm guessing that "Does a chemical peel hurt?" is a biggie!) I'd been planning to order an over-the-counter peel when we were in Iceland , but my computer led me a different direction. I decided to do this on a whim after Groupon greeted me one morning with a great $40 chemical peel deal. Now, I can read your mind. You just gasped in horror and thought  You trusted your face to a  discount  chemical peel?!  You're wondering w

Hello Fresh Complaints

Hello, my bloggy friends. I have a HelloFresh complaint and believe they are pulling a scam. Yours truly came *this close* to falling for it.  Maybe scam is too harsh of a word. Sneaky? You can decide for yourself. The fact that there are so many Hello Fresh complaints online does seem suspicious. My main complaint about Hello Fresh has to do with their promotional rate, which seems like it is set up to be intentionally misleading (more on this below). Despite so many people complaining about being charged more than they thought they'd agreed to, Hello Fresh maintains this as part of their business model and continues to mislead. So it's intentional, right? I do not recommend Hello Fresh. For starters, the service is just ingredients-by-mail with recipes, not meals. You can buy your own ingredients for much less, especially now that most grocery stores conveniently offer pickup and delivery. Excellent recipes are easy to find.  Click here for a list of top-rated, reader-favorit

10 Canned Cinnamon Roll Hacks

You're in for a treat. Today I'm sharing my best canned cinnamon roll hacks and improvements for turning store-bought cinnamon rolls, like the Pillsbury Grands ones or even the store brand, into something special.  Dry cinnamon rolls? No thank you. They need to be OOEY and GOOEY. That's just Cinnamon Roll 101. All of these ideas keep Pillsbury canned cinnamon rolls soft, company-worthy, and delicious. These are also great for taking homemade cinnamon rolls up a notch, but what a pain that is. With these better-than-homemade canned cinnamon roll hacks, you'll never bother to bake them from scratch again. Test out some of these ideas tomorrow. Won't it be nice to dig into a mouthwatering cinnamon roll for breakfast? You can't get a better start to your day than that. Baby Taped to Wall (But Why?!)

I could totally see Sexy Nerd doing this if we had a baby. Honestly though, I would probably be cheering him on. Also, I've read online that some folks are outraged by this photo, thinking the baby is being abused. To me though, the baby looks well supported, as if it is in a bouncy chair, and none of the duct tape is touching bare skin. I honestly think this was just intended to be a funny photo. It's not like the parents taped their baby to the wall so they could go out drinking and partying in a cocaine-fueled hysteria. I doubt anyone on cocaine could even achieve this. This photo is from 2010, maybe earlier. Wouldn't it be great to interview this older child one day? It's time to get on that, People Magazine. The internet wants to know what happened to the duct tape baby! Baby Taped to Wall Poor ducky. Enjoy this post? Please be sure to check out my  Amerisleep Mattress Reviews  page as well, which is my most popular blog post of all time.

Window Seat Idea - Dream Home Inspiration of the Day

See it? Waaay at the back of the photo?  I like how the window seat extends past the window all the way to the wall. How about you? If that's not your style, how about one of these lovely window seats? I'll seat you, my pretty, and your little dog too. How perfect would this be in a home office? I'd swap out that wimpy rug with a larger one.

3 Minute Toaster/Convection Oven Smores

These are perfect when you're craving a quick, sugary treat. They work equally well in a toaster oven and a convection oven. Best of all, compared to eating an entire bag of Oreos (something I have never  done), they're quite healthy. What's that, you say? You already know how to make s'mores in the toaster oven? Well then, sit back and enjoy the ooey-gooey marshmallowy photos. (And if you're someone who works with me, please keep the "I've seen her polish off an entire bag of Oreo cookies" nonsense to yourself.)  Step 1: Put desired amount of graham crackers on a toaster oven/convection oven-safe pan.   Looks like it's time to clean this pan, Sexy Nerd Optional 1st step, which is Sexy Nerd's favorite: Spread peanut butter on each graham cracker (I'm not much of a peanut butter fan - WHAT?!? - so I skip this step.) Cover with yummy marshmallows. Top with chocolate chips. Place in the toaster o

Sending NAKED Emails

Although SN and I started out in a long-distance relationship, with me in New Mexico and him in Michigan, drinking that famous Flint water, we haven't spent much time apart since before our wedding 6 years ago, when I took a family reunion trip to the Seychelles and Paris without him. (He "had to work", but I think the idea of 3 weeks nonstop with my mom terrified him. To be fair, it was pretty scary!) Now, he has been gone on a business trip for nearly 2 weeks and I'm kinda starting to miss him. He says he misses me too. So, I decided to have some fun and send him the following email: Subject: Here are some NAKED photos for you Message: Be sure to delete these after you look at them. The photos, one titled "hubba hubba" and the other "you know you love it": "I ain't afraid to show it, show it, show it, show it." "I'm sexy and I know it." Yep, that is a 100% collar-free, naked Pica . Sexy Nerd&#

My Instant Pot Explosion!

Like many new Instant Pot owners, I've wondered, How many Instant Pots have exploded?  (Eeek!) I'm happy to report that my research on Snopes and other sites has shown that these do not explode, at least not when used properly. There is a lawsuit between a woman in Texas and the Instant Pot manufacturer, but she admits she had thrown a towel over the steam vent. Do NOT do this.  Still concerned? Consider that on Prime Day of 2018, Amazon sold more than 300,000 Instant Pots. That's more than a quarter of a million sales in only 1 day! If these things were not safe, you would see news stories every day about someone being injured. Still, things can go wrong. We love our Instant Pot, the digital pressure cooker that seems to suddenly be in every home. You can't mess up - just throw in random ingredients and you'll get something yummy every time. It's foolproof. At least, that's how I used to feel about our Instant Pot, until the explosion... Inst
