Amerisleep Recover+ Duvet with Celliant

SN and I have a new blanket, which I normally wouldn't bother to blog about, but this is no ordinary blanket. (Actually, it's technically a duvet, but isn't that just a fancy word for blanket?)(Google says it's not. I'm going to use it as a blanket anyway.) It is made with a Celliant fabric, just like our beloved Amerisleep mattresses, and has a Celliant filling.

Amerisleep says their new duvet is like snuggling with a cloud, but I prefer to think of it as a big, toasty cinnamon bun.

We've been using the new Amerisleep Recover+ Duvet for about 2 weeks and have had a love/hate relationship with it.

LOVE: Surprisingly, through the magic of Celliant, the Recover+ Duvet actually calms my Restless Leg Syndrome. I know, this sounds crazy. A blanket that cures Restless Leg Syndrome? The science behind Celliant is at the bottom of this post.

HATE: The queen-size will set you back a whopping $246.50. That's a lot of money for a blanket! (You can save 15% on any size Recover+ Duvet through this link when you use promo code SHEETS15.)

LOVE: The Recover+ Duvet somehow keeps us at the perfect temperature, no matter how hot or how cold our bedroom is. How does it do this?

HATE: There is an adjustment period for this blanket. I slept terribly the first few nights while I got used to this newfangled, space age duvet.

Here is our new Amerisleep Recover+ Duvet with Celliant, cozying up our 8-year-old Amerisleep AS3 mattress:

I should probably explain that we're still trying to choose the perfect wallpaper for our bedroom, which we want to make dark and cozy like a cocoon. SN likes the wallpaper on the left (of course he does - it's from Ralph Lauren and is obscenely expensive) and I initially preferred the pattern on the right, but am now unsure about either. Might the perfect wallpaper be no wallpaper at all?

Satin pillowcases on our Amerisleep pillows because they're less likely to pull your hair or cause wrinkles on your face while you sleep. (And because they were a steal at only $5 each!) Stitch is in the photo just for fun.

Funny side story: SN bought Stitch for me when we were dating. His little brother embarrassed him by saying, "Nothing says 'I love you' like a big blue stuffed animal."

Amerisleep Recover+ Duvet with Celliant: My Personal Experience

So, how does Celliant make the Amerisleep Recover+ Duvet more valuable than an ordinary blanket? To be completely honest, I had low expectations for this.

According to Amerisleep, "Celliant's FDA-determined technology helps you recharge while you sleep. Celliant safely turns body heat into full-spectrum infrared energy. When your muscle and tissue absorb this energy, it promotes a temporary increase in local circulation that helps you recover faster and wake up refreshed." You can wash the duvet, but the amount of Celliant will not diminish. They also note that the FDA has determined Celliant products are medical devices.

It sort of sounds like those gimmicky copper bracelets they sell from a cart at the mall, doesn't it? (No offense to anyone reading this who is currently wearing a copper bracelet. I'm sure the universe it totally sending powerful beams into your wrist.) As a lifelong, chronic insomniac though (even as a baby), I am open to trying anything to improve my sleep. The Amerisleep Recover+ Duvet has a 1-year warranty, so it seemed like I had nothing to lose.

It can be machine washed or hand washed in cold water. Do not dry clean or chlorine bleach. Tumble dry low.

Amerisleep claims use of this blanket will result in deeper sleep. I can usually fall asleep without too much difficulty, but wake up 2 or 3 hours later with no hope of falling back to sleep for at least several hours, so this sounded like a dream come true.

The first few nights, I slept terribly. I was wide awake at 3 am and mentally writing a scathing review of the Recover+ Duvet. It's marketed as being like hugging a cloud, but to me it felt stiff and overly thick. Amerisleep claims it has breathable moisture control that wicks away humidity and prevents overheating, but I kept waking up covered in sweat, angrily throwing my top blanket onto the floor.

And that was exactly the problem.

When you use a Celliant blanket, that is all you need. Don't have it as your top blanket or your bottom blanket, but as your only blanket. I still don't understand how it does this, but when there are no other blankets, the Recover+ Duvet keeps me warm when the bedroom is cold (we've tested this down to 52 degrees Fahrenheit) and cool when the bedroom is hot (we've tested this up to 77 degrees Fahrenheit).

I have been waking less, just as Amerisleep claimed. More importantly, I've noticed that the irresistible urge to stretch and flex and move my legs each night has gone away. I initially thought this was just a placebo effect and that my legs weren't bothering me simply because I thought I had something that would stop them from bothering me.

I wasn't even going to include anything about Restless Leg Syndrome in this blog post, thinking it must be only in my mind. After all, Amerisleep doesn't mention anything about this in their marketing of the Recover+ Duvet. We're almost 2 weeks in though and my legs have felt better every night, even when I initially didn't like this blanket.

I decided to do some research on Celliant to determine if it could actually be helping with Restless Leg Syndrome.

 Celliant: The Science

According to a Celliant Pilot Sleep Study at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in 2010 and a Single Center Prospective Comparative Study to Evaluate the Performance of an Upper Torso Garment at the Long Beach VA Memorial Hospital, Journal of Textile Science and Engineering in 2014, use of Celliant bedding resulted in participants
  • falling asleep faster
  • sleeping an average of 18.3 additional minutes per night
  • having a tissue oxygenation of 8.4%, resulting in increased energy, through vasodilation (improved local circulation), making more oxygen available to your cells
Results of more than a dozen Celliant clinical trials are available in detail on the Celliant website. In addition to sleep improvement, studies on the medical benefits of Celliant often focus on its affect on patients with diabetes. They have found statistically significant reduction of pain and improved comfort for subjects, as well as an average increase in TCPO2 levels from 12% in the hands and 8% in the feet of diabetic subjects.

Based on this, it seems reasonable to believe there is more to the improvement in my Restless Leg Syndrome than merely a placebo effect. In the quest to improve my sleep, the Amerisleep Recover+ Duvet has been a helpful addition to my nightly routine. Due to the high cost, I would not recommend it to someone who already sleeps well and who does not wake up with muscle soreness. For everyone else, from athletes to my fellow insomniacs, you're going to (eventually) love the the Recover+ Duvet.

Oh, and a side note in case anyone at Amerisleep reads this: I would looove for you to offer this product as a weighted blanket. Celliant Technology + Weighted Blanket = Finally a Weighted Blanket That's Not Too Stinkin' Hot! Please, Amerisleep?

I hope you have found my honest review of the Amerisleep Recover+ Duvet with Celliant beneficial. If you make a purchase, I'd love for you to email me your experience with the product!

Chemical Peel Before & After

This article has been updated! My new chemical peel post, which includes pricing, Jessner peel before and after photos, product recommendations, and a helpful timeline for scheduling your treatments, is at the bottom. My original Jessner peel post (one of the most popular on my site of all time) is at the beginning. Original Chemical Peel Article Considering a chemical peel? I recently underwent my first Jessner peel and thought I'd share my results, post a Jessner peel review, and answer some frequently asked chemical peel questions. (I'm guessing that "Does a chemical peel hurt?" is a biggie!) I'd been planning to order an over-the-counter peel when we were in Iceland , but my computer led me a different direction. I decided to do this on a whim after Groupon greeted me one morning with a great $40 chemical peel deal. Now, I can read your mind. You just gasped in horror and thought  You trusted your face to a  discount  chemical peel?!  You're wondering w

How to Move a Mattress

My site is popular for reviewing memory foam mattresses. With today's bed-in-a-box options lasting much longer than the traditional 7 years of a spring mattress, there's a good chance you'll eventually need to move one. But how? This is  how to move a mattress  without damaging it - even by yourself!  When we were faced with the challenge of moving our beloved Amerisleep AS3  to our new home, it seemed like my readers would enjoy the details. This handy tip should work for any memory foam bed, including Casper, Leesa, and Nectar.  I'm happy to report there is an extremely simple way to do it. Apartment and dorm dwellers rejoice! How to Move a Mattress At first, I wasn't sure how to move our king-size mattress down a flight of stairs. It's a problem we've dreaded solving ever since we made the decision to build a new house.  The answer? It was right in the back of our truck.  Ratchet straps . This solution could also serve as a 'How To' for returning

Hello Fresh Complaints

Hello, my bloggy friends. I have a HelloFresh complaint and believe they are pulling a scam. Yours truly came *this close* to falling for it.  Maybe scam is too harsh of a word. Sneaky? You can decide for yourself. The fact that there are so many Hello Fresh complaints online does seem suspicious. My main complaint about Hello Fresh has to do with their promotional rate, which seems like it is set up to be intentionally misleading (more on this below). Despite so many people complaining about being charged more than they thought they'd agreed to, Hello Fresh maintains this as part of their business model and continues to mislead. So it's intentional, right? I do not recommend Hello Fresh. For starters, the service is just ingredients-by-mail with recipes, not meals. You can buy your own ingredients for much less, especially now that most grocery stores conveniently offer pickup and delivery. Excellent recipes are easy to find.  Click here for a list of top-rated, reader-favorit

Window Seat Idea - Dream Home Inspiration of the Day

See it? Waaay at the back of the photo?  I like how the window seat extends past the window all the way to the wall. How about you? If that's not your style, how about one of these lovely window seats? I'll seat you, my pretty, and your little dog too. How perfect would this be in a home office? I'd swap out that wimpy rug with a larger one.

My Instant Pot Explosion!

Like many new Instant Pot owners, I've wondered, How many Instant Pots have exploded?  (Eeek!) I'm happy to report that my research on Snopes and other sites has shown that these do not explode, at least not when used properly. There is a lawsuit between a woman in Texas and the Instant Pot manufacturer, but she admits she had thrown a towel over the steam vent. Do NOT do this.  Still concerned? Consider that on Prime Day of 2018, Amazon sold more than 300,000 Instant Pots. That's more than a quarter of a million sales in only 1 day! If these things were not safe, you would see news stories every day about someone being injured. Still, things can go wrong. We love our Instant Pot, the digital pressure cooker that seems to suddenly be in every home. You can't mess up - just throw in random ingredients and you'll get something yummy every time. It's foolproof. At least, that's how I used to feel about our Instant Pot, until the explosion... Inst

3 Minute Toaster/Convection Oven Smores

These are perfect when you're craving a quick, sugary treat. They work equally well in a toaster oven and a convection oven. Best of all, compared to eating an entire bag of Oreos (something I have never  done), they're quite healthy. What's that, you say? You already know how to make s'mores in the toaster oven? Well then, sit back and enjoy the ooey-gooey marshmallowy photos. (And if you're someone who works with me, please keep the "I've seen her polish off an entire bag of Oreo cookies" nonsense to yourself.)  Step 1: Put desired amount of graham crackers on a toaster oven/convection oven-safe pan.   Looks like it's time to clean this pan, Sexy Nerd Optional 1st step, which is Sexy Nerd's favorite: Spread peanut butter on each graham cracker (I'm not much of a peanut butter fan - WHAT?!? - so I skip this step.) Cover with yummy marshmallows. Top with chocolate chips. Place in the toaster o

Reuzel: Grooming Tonic Industry Review

I'm looking out for you, my bloggy friends. At my last haircut, the hairdresser shared his favorite hair product of all time, REUZEL (which I'd never heard of), with me and I had enough sense to get the details to share with you. He didn't even have a bottle of it to sell me. It was a genuine, honest review. Also, are they still called hairdressers? Is this the equivalent of calling your flight attendant a stewardess? Stylist? Barber? Reuzel  Grooming Tonic Review You know those men who have the softest, most perfect hair and it seems so unfair because most men don't even care about their hair? (Or so they say.) I think this is their secret. While you're here, be sure to read my  funny haircut story . Geez, I'm awkward. The fact that I was brave enough to ask to take this photo at the salon is proof I love my blog readers. Never heard of it? That's probably because Reuzel Grooming Tonic is marketed toward men. From reading their endless 5-star reviews, men
