Road Trip Day 4: Las Vegas

We start our day by checking into the Imperial Palace casino/hotel. It was less than $40 a night and included tickets to see their auto collection and 2 tickets to Nathan Burton's comedy magic show. Not too shabby.

Ah, Vegas! If it weren't for the heat, the crime, the crowds, and the general sleaziness, I could see us living here.

Even Sexy Nerd enjoys shopping when it's on a fake Paris street.

We shared a plate of nachos at Margaritaville. Usually, it is one of our favorite Vegas stops, but this time didn't go very well. Not only did they never play the Margaritaville song and sacrifice the girl to the volcano (awesome), they ripped us off. When we ordered the nachos, the waitress casually asked if we want salsa. They're nachos. Sure we want salsa! That's a standard nacho ingredient, right? Surprise, surprise when we saw the additional $2 charge for salsa on our bill. Normally, it is just me who gets irked by things like this, but even Sexy Nerd thought the $2 hidden fee was a bit ridiculous. Shame on you, Margaritaville!

Still, the nachos were yummy. I think they are supposed to serve 4.

Maybe next time we will stay at the Flamingo. We always end up in their outdoor area taking photos anyway.

Good times.

Plus, they have cute little turtles!

Sexy Nerd wasn't too sure about all of the animals at the Flamingo casino though.

Kinda looks like a Vegas showgirl.

Continuing with our standard Las Vegas stops, it was time to share a sundae at Ghirardelli. At almost $9, sharing would have to do.

The Vegas pigeons like Ghirardelli too.

We are old. Shopping + nachos + ice cream = nap time!

We couldn't sleep too long though. It was time to use our free tickets for the Nathan Burton show. It was okay. Really, it seemed like it was the exact same trick, over and over again, just modified slightly, (an assistant would appear/dissappear from a box, then from a fake microwave, then from under a table, etc.)

We were really looking forward to our next show though - The Phantom of the Opera. With an hour to kill, we headed over to The Venetian and did some shopping along the way. Sexy Nerd took this opportunity to document the big flaw with my MBTs. No matter how tightly I tie them, the laces always come undone. Sure, I could just go buy some different shoelaces, but I've already invested so much into the shoes. I can't bear to spend another $1.99!

Almost showtime. We arrived at the Venetian too early though. Not wanting to sit around waiting inside a theater, we opted instead to ride the steep moving walkways a couple of times.

Who says you need money to have a good time? Darn, it just occurred to me how funny it would have been if I'd had Sexy Nerd copy the expression of the man on the poster behind him. There's no way around it. We're just going to have to go back.

Of course, there's no photography allowed in the theater, so here's just a sneaky shot we took of the stage before the show. Sexy Nerd and I have seen the movie version and another performance of the play, but the version at The Venetian was easily the best. Well, the best with exceptions. They wanted to make The Phantom seem more scary, so they tweaked a couple of things in the script, like downplaying the importance of keeping your hand at the level of your eye and they have Christine fearing that The Phantom will kill her, instead of Raoul. Hmmm, now that I think about it, this version was second best, after the movie. Still fun though.

Psyched up from the play, we energetically hit the town, determined to stay up as late as possible. After all, this was our last day in Vegas.

Late, right??

How to Move a Mattress

My site is popular for reviewing memory foam mattresses. With today's bed-in-a-box options lasting much longer than the traditional 7 years of a spring mattress, there's a good chance you'll eventually need to move one. But how? This is  how to move a mattress  without damaging it - even by yourself!  When we were faced with the challenge of moving our beloved Amerisleep AS3  to our new home, it seemed like my readers would enjoy the details. This handy tip should work for any memory foam bed, including Casper, Leesa, and Nectar.  I'm happy to report there is an extremely simple way to do it. Apartment and dorm dwellers rejoice! It's a problem we've dreaded solving ever since we made the decision to build a new house.  The answer? It was right in the back of our truck.  Ratchet straps . This solution could also serve as a 'How To' for returning ...

Window Seat Idea - Dream Home Inspiration of the Day

See it? Waaay at the back of the photo?  I like how the window seat extends past the window all the way to the wall. How about you? If that's not your style, how about one of these lovely window seats? I'll seat you, my pretty, and your little dog too. How perfect would this be in a home office? I'd swap out that wimpy rug with a larger one.

Instant Pot Oatmeal & Quinoa Recipe (Healthy Egg-Free Breakfast)

*Do not add chia seeds - see note at the end of this recipe. In response to my popular Instant Pot Explosion blog post, I've had a few blog readers ask for my oatmeal with quinoa recipe, which is made in the Instant Pot. This seems a bit odd...you guys aren't trying to recreate that gooey mess in your own kitchens, right?  My recipe does make delicious, foolproof Instant Pot oatmeal. It's only for patient people though. Whatever you do, do not manually release the pressure valve at the end of the cooking cycle! This recipe is also great in a Crock Pot, though that method takes longer. I like to set the temperature to Low before bed. What a hearty, indulgent breakfast to wake up to!  I've been cooking up batches of my Oatmeal with Quinoa for years, long before I'd heard of the Instant Pot, and have even gifted the dry ingredients to health-conscious friends and family, who've suggested I sell this. Shark Tank, here I come! Oatmeal with Quinoa No eggs/...

Reuzel: Grooming Tonic Industry Review

I'm looking out for you, my bloggy friends. At my last haircut, the hairdresser shared his favorite hair product of all time, REUZEL (which I'd never heard of), with me and I had enough sense to get the details to share with you. He didn't even have a bottle of it to sell me. It was a genuine, honest review. Also, are they still called hairdressers? Is this the equivalent of calling your flight attendant a stewardess? Stylist? Barber? Reuzel  Grooming Tonic Review You know those men who have the softest, most perfect hair and it seems so unfair because most men don't even care about their hair? (Or so they say.) I think this is their secret. While you're here, be sure to read my  funny haircut story . Geez, I'm awkward. The fact that I was brave enough to ask to take this photo at the salon is proof I love my blog readers. Never heard of it? That's probably because Reuzel Grooming Tonic is marketed toward men. From reading their endless 5-star reviews, men ...

Santa Fe Souper Bowl: Your Guide to The Food Depot's Annual Event

Hey there, fellow flavor fanatics! Hold onto your ladles because last weekend, my Sexy Nerd and I embarked on another culinary adventure at The Food Depot's Souper Bowl in Santa Fe, NM. Here's the scoop: Picture 24 local chefs in a soup showdown extravaganza, like the Super Bowl, but with more slurping and less tackling. The 30th-anniversary Souper Bowl drew 2,000 hungry souls, VIPs storming the scene at 11:00, and the General Admission fiesta kicking off at noon. Winners were crowned by 2:00 pm, with categories like Best Soup in Santa Fe & Best Vegetarian Soup. Now, the Lobby Soup Showdown had us torn between Chicken Posole Rojo and Tomato Lentil. This is New Mexico, so our money was on posole for the win. Saving room for soup, not just bread, was a smart move. There was so much soup I could barely sample them all, lest I burst, or at the very least make a funny sloshing sound when I walk. Sexy Nerd's fave? Boxcar Santa Fe's, which cleverly included Green Chile...
