Ta Da! Our New House Is Ready For Her Close-Up

You've all been very patient waiting to see our new home. The bank admits we "fell through the cracks" (their exact words!) but now we're finally, finally going to actually build this thing.

The bank actually took so long that we have no choice but to close on our construction loan next Wednesday, because waiting until next Thursday would be outside the application window and we'd have to start over from the beginning. That said, next Tuesday would be too soon to close on the loan because the bank "can't possibly have everything ready" on their end by then.

I just have to keep reminding myself that we got a screamin' deal by going with Compass Bank.

Our house is going to look just like this (pending HOA-approval) but with a few nifty details Sexy Nerd's computer program couldn't show - yellow shutters around the big square window and a white (or possibly red...no, definitely white...I think...) arbor above the garage door. We're going to plant Spanish Brooms (yellow flower explosions!) in the front yard, which should accentuate the front door nicely. Sexy Nerd fought me on adding windows above the 8' front doors and the sets of 3 square windows above the kitchen and living room windows, insisting that the windows were gargantuanly tall without any extra help. I disagreed.

It's sooo much easier to add the windows before the house is built, Sexy Nerd. You can never have too many windows. Just go with it!

I've also been toying with the idea of placing a gel fireplace (or even just a pretty mirror) on the outside of the chimney, along with a little table and 2 chairs. Wouldn't that be cute?

Did you see the private guest entry? And the dog run linked to Pica and Biscuit's very own doggy room? How about the "master retreat" featuring a hot tub and sauna? Oh, and before you complain that a 2 car garage isn't big enough, it's actually an oversized 4 car tandem garage.

This place is going to be awesome.

Main Stucco Color: El Ray La Luz

Accent Stucco Color: Sto San Antonio (We aren't actually sure we're allowed to mix 2 different stucco brands, but the builder hasn't said no yet...)

Front/Back Doors: Sherwin Williams Lemon Twist (We'd been searching for the perfect, cheerful yellow without any luck, until my May issue of Coastal Living arrived featuring this same paint color on the door on their cover.)

Trim: Behr Cherry Cobbler (This is the color of our current kitchen and front door. It's a great paint and our way of bringing our first home with us.)

Roof: ABC Metal Rustic Trail (It actually rusts, but I'm told it won't rust all the way through.)(This had better be true!)

Stone Veneer: Coronado Osage Ancient Reef

So, what do you think? If there's anything you would change, now is the time to speak up!

Give Me Ants at the Picnic Any Day

Sexy Nerd and I are finally, finally almost ready to break ground on our mountain dream home outside of Albuquerque, NM. How much longer has it taken than we'd expected? Well, I thought we'd have been living in the house a long time ago!

We hiked our 13 acre lot yesterday, double checking the house placement and making sure the windows are correctly located to maximize the views. We have new neighbors on both sides of our lot and we discovered one of the homes has built a new fence since we last visited, about 10 feet of which is on our property! In the interest of making friends with our neighbors though, we decided not to say anything.

There's a tree that has fallen over at the top of our lot. Our plan is to eventually turn it into a fireplace mantle. In the meantime, it has been a great picnic spot, complete with 360 degree views of the mountains. We'd packed a snack and a beer each and up we hiked to the edge of our property, looking forward to resting on that fallen log. It was a warm, sunshiny day. On the way, we remarked how surprising it is that we've owned our lot for so many years but have never come across a single snake.

Can you tell where I'm heading with this?

We were nearly at the picnic tree when Sexy Nerd (thank goodness) saw this enormous bull snake, lounging casually beneath it. It's difficult to tell, but his head (complete with his beady little snake eyes - yuck!) is underneath the cactus. It figures that the cactus needles wouldn't bother him, the creepy, soulless monster that he is. I am never, NEVER picnicking there ever again.

He's not so scary, you think? That's what I thought too, at first. After all, bull snakes aren't poisonous and one of the benefits of moving to the mountains is enjoying the wildlife. But then I wanted to take a better photo for my blog. And then? Then this fanged, bloodsucking bastard RAN faster than I can run, the opposite direction, which goes without saying because otherwise I surely wouldn't be typing this because I'd be dead. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I'd be telling you that it's ridiculous to describe a snake as running, because obviously something without any legs is incapable of doing such a thing. Fine. He freaking sprinted like he was going for a gold medal. I may have screamed.

I'm just going to sit inside my mountain dream home. I'll park inside the garage and will never have to actually set foot in the great horrifying outdoors. And if a snake runs/sprints/leaps/gallavants inside when the garage door is open? Obviously, I'll have no choice but to burn our mountain dream home right to the ground.

Since writing this post, I've learned my new home has snakes living IN THE TREES. Aggressive ones.

WTF, nature?

We have the Liberty model. It's a super-firm mattress. We've slept on it almost every night for more than 4 years and it's 100% like new. I think the best compliment a customer can give is to buy the same product again. When we move to our custom dream home (which we should be breaking ground on any day now - fingers crossed!) we're planning to include 4 Amerisleep mattresses: one in the master bedroom, one in the guest bedroom, one for the office daybed, and one for the theater room bunk bed. Let's hope Amerisleep continues their $50 off coupon program for at least another year - we're going to need the discounts!

Have you purchased an Amerisleep memory foam mattress already but forgot to use my coupon link to save an extra $50? Email Amerisleep and let them know. From my experience, they have great customer service, so I'm sure they will help you out.

And, as always, this post is NOT sponsored by Amerisleep.

I've been updating my site (surely you noticed!) and have several new features in the works, including a 52 week series of simple, self improvement posts called "Today I Will...". Stay tuned for more!

And in the meantime, here's a peek at the new blog banner that didn't quite make the cut:

Nyah, nyah!
