Warby Parker and Davis Vision: Navigating the Coverage Maze

Dreaming of Warby Parker frames but worried about your Davis Vision insurance coverage? You're not alone. Buckle up, fellow blurry-visionaries, because this is your guide to navigating the Warby Parker-Davis Vision labyrinth. Sexy Nerd and I recently purchased new glasses at our local Stanton Optical store and the salesperson was surprised and impressed by how good our Davis Vision coverage is, saying several times "Man, this plan is legit!" Unfortunately, this does no good at Warby Parker. Q. Does Warby Parker take Davis Vision? A. The Warby Parker website says Yes, but this is misleading. Warby Parker only accepts Davis Vision plans through Boeing, General Electric and GE Healthcare. If you are not employed by one of these, you have an out-of-network Davis Vision plan. Yes, even you, with your top tier plan that costs extra! Q. Will Warby Parker file my insurance? A. There's a reason Warby Parker makes a big deal about using your HSA and FSA funds to pay for glasse

My Awkward Haircut Story

You know those girls who obsess over their hair and have a standing appointment with the salon every 6 weeks? That's not me. I've always been the type of girl who gets her hair cut just once or twice a year - whenever Great Clips or Super Cuts sends out a $4.99 haircut coupon.  When Groupon offered 50% off at a top-rated salon, I decided to splurge. The deal included highlights and a glamorous cut. I'd only had experience with adding my own highlights at home , not quite successfully, and was in over my head. Haircut Story Haircut story from a girl who has no idea what to do at the salon. Because these things always seem to happen to me, I have a silly haircut story from the salon.  I wish I'd thought to bring my camera with me. When my hair was being highlighted and was crimped into dozens of foil pieces, I looked like I could have been the baby of the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. I suppose them having a baby together would overshadow my snazzy new haircut. About tho

My Never-Ending Story of Cosmetic Dentistry: Braces Before & After

This is my  "Can you believe these are really my teeth?!"  face. Braces Before & After My mom insists I've done so much to my teeth that they're going to fall out. IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY, MOM! For the record, my teeth are all icky and brown in the middle photo above for two reasons: I'd recently gotten my braces off. Teeth with braces are impossible to keep clean. In preparation for gum surgery, I'd been using a prescription mouthwash that removes any trace of white from your teeth. I've had a terrible smile ever since 3rd grade, when I fell face-first onto the road and fractured my front teeth. My dentist at the time did the best he could to make them look nice, but dental technology in the early 90s just wasn't what it is today. Plus, let's face it, a 3rd grader is rarely a model patient.  Fearing braces, which I was convinced would be painful (not to mention that I was more than awkward and dorky enough without

9 Ways to Strengthen Your Hair

How to Strengthen Your Hair Guest Post collaboration with Ashley Nielsen and KittyDeschanel.com We all want beautiful, full hair. After all, who doesn't spend time every morning doing their hair to ensure not a strand is out of place before leaving the house? Unfortunately, getting strong, healthy hair that’s easy to manage takes work. Everyone has different hair and the products and methods that work for your friends may not work for you. While genes play a role in hair type and texture, it doesn’t mean you can’t make small changes to your beauty routine to improve the health of your hair. Here are a few ways you can strengthen your hair. 9 Ways to Strengthen Your Hair 1. Change Your Hairstyle Wearing your hair the same way every day can damage it. For example, if you wear your ponytail in the same spot, you weaken your hair in one area, especially if you’re using tight elastics. In addition, tight hairstyles, including ponytails and braids, can stress your hair by pulling it in

Jessner Peel

Can you believe it has been 7 years since my first  Jessner Peel   and the resulting blog post (filled with gory photos - don't say I didn't warn you), which is still popular to this day?  I remember being nervous prior to my first professional treatment and thought it would be helpful to share my experience with chemical peels for anyone else who is considering this beauty service. How nervous was I? Here's what I wrote here on my site back in 2013: I hate my skin! Hate, hate, hate!! This week, at the age of 29, I had my first chemical peel. It was almost painless, but I'm told that my entire face is going to come sloughing off like a snakeskin, probably starting tomorrow. I'm also told that under  absolutely no circumstance  can I help the icky bits of dead, dried skin on their journey to the floor, where they will undoubtedly and repulsively be frantically gobbled up by Pica and Biscuit. Hands off, no matter how ridiculous and gross my face looks, or I'
